The wheels are turning...

I want a nice SLR digital camera. Granted I have no money, I don't know when I ever will, so I figure in the end the camera will pay for itself. I am dying to do something with this passion of photography I have seemed to develop. I want input from those I know and those I don't know, any advice would be appreciated. What is the best camera out there for first time users and for a decent price? I want to do my research and in the end I just want your opinion and knowledge of "fancy" digital cameras. THANKS!!!

I can't give you any advice, because I don't know good cameras. You'll do great though. Wish you lived closer so you could take our pictures.

Anyways can't wait till you do get a nice camera to see all the neat pictures you'll take, cuz you already do so good with your little one!! :~) Oh and you still need to help me with my background...tried doing the steps you told me and as usual I can't figure it out!

I have been wondering the same thing. I am planning on taking a photography class in the next few months and hope to get some good advice there. I still need help with basic layouts, let alone camera advice. Let me know what you find out!

Cordie you should definetly get a good camera and take up photography because your pictures are so good. (I thought you might all ready have one.) I have the same desire, I would love to get into photoraphy. I just finished a photoshop class. Anyway I don't know very much about cameras, but my sister in law has a canon rebel and she loves it. I think they are around $600-$700, but they just came out with a new model that is around $900.

I love my Canon Rebel! But it's the only nice one I've ever used so I don't have anything to compare it to. I'm so excited for you to get one. . .you'll love it!

thanks for the kind comment on my blog! I have the Canon 40D and I love it!! I also have the 50mm 1.8 lense that I use, it is a fixed portrait lense but it is the only one I have at the moment so I use it for everything. The camera I got off ebay for about $650 and the lense new is about $85. I really want the 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM, that is supposed to be an all around great lense, and it runs new about
$1, 200. I have learned that the lense is the most important, so try for a decent camera, but put the money into the lense and you will usually be happy with the results. B&H photo is a reliable source where alot of photographers go to get thier equipment. You have taken some great photos! good luck and happy shopping!!

My hubby loves his Nikon D40! Beautiful results on "auto" or kick it up a notch and use all the features like a pro. Quick and easy to change out lenses - and I believe old Nikon lenses are interchangeable with it as well. Great package prices at Costco.

May be slightly higher priced, but after tons of research we felt it was the best quality for the money.

Look forward to the beautiful photos to come...

I just found the Nikon D90 at Costco. It is $1399.99, but it comes with several lenes. It looks awesome, but I also read that the Nikon D200 is the "camera to bridge the gap between the professional and the entry level Digital SLRs." I couldn't find a lot of big differences and it is a few hundred dollars more (on-line, I am sure with some shopping around you could find both for cheaper). I do know it is on my "wish list."

Cordie-
I have a Nikon D60 I have loved it! It is still new so I have a lot to learn. I got it through Inkleys online. I thought it was a good deal. I got 2 lenses and they threw in a printer. Have fun searching, you definately need one because you are so good at taking pictures.

We have a Nikon D40 and absolutely love it. We bought it from Inkleys and got free photography classes that show us how to use it! (That has helped out a ton!) There is a lot of cool things you can do that I had no idea until we went to the class. I would highly recommend this camera. We had to save up birthday and christmas money to get ours. They aren't cheap, but if you watch, you can get good deals. We bought ours when there was a promotion to get the camera, 2 lenses, the photography classes, and the carrying case. I think we spent about $700. But it was WORTH EVERY PENNY! We love that we can take pictures immediately to catch the right pose. (Our old camera took forever to take the picture)Good luck with your researching. If you have any additional questions you can e-mail us at trevandamy@comcast.net. Your kids are growing so fast and are so adorable. We are excited that Josh is coming home! He has been in our thoughts and prayers!

We understand that disposable income is a little bit tough to come by while you're still a student. We are understanding that all-too-well. Things are starting to take off with out photo business in SLC, and feel free to email us anytime about any questions you might have. It's a little tough in a south-facing economy, but if you keep your up-front costs low, you could definitely make the cost of the camera back in a fairly short time.

We have a Canon 5D, which is a really decent prosumer camera. Lots of upscale wedding professionals use it exclusively. Canon just barely came out with a replacement for this camera, so older bodies could be had on eBay for around 1600 dollars. You could find a kit with (decent, but not excellent) lenses for around 2300 dollars. As more people start to replace their 5D's with the newest model, prices may drop a lot more.

I realize this is a lot more than the 600-900 dollars that most of the consumer cameras cost, but we think it's worth the extra cost. Even if it only makes sure that you have a nicer camera than the grandpa at the event you're shooting.
